RPC Service terminates???

artgibb

My system is constantly shutting down while i am working
on the web. I get a message that tells me the system is
shutting down in 60 secs, initiated by NT
Authority\System. A message below that one says "Windows
must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Service terminated unexpectedly."

This happens constantly and is incredibly frustrating.
Can anybody help solve this problem? Any help would
obviously be greatly appreciated!

You most likely have a worm W32.Blaster.Worm
DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network IMMEDIATELY.

If necessary to stop the reboot process:
Start/Run
Type "shutdown -a" ENTER

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY, before connecting to the
internet:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673

VERY IMPORTANT to follow ALL steps, closing ports or installing the
patch is NOT enough.
Download the patch and regedit referenced in the article below.
You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and burn to CD or
save on floppies.
Each file is small enough to fit on a floppy.

Follow this to clean and protect your computer:

After this is resolved prevent similar occurrences by installing ALL
Critical Updates from Windows Update.
Keep antivirus up to date and run at least weekly.
Install or enable a firewall.

First, stop the bug from running by hitting CTRL-ALT-DELETE and
bringing up the task manager. Look for msblast.exe in the list, and
kill it. Now your computer won't shut down, but the bug is still there
and will run the next time you start your machine. Go to this URL to
find out how to get rid of it:

moval.tool.html>

See www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rpc
<http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm> for a quick removal tool for the
MSBlast worm and a link to the Microsoft patch to prevent future infection.
Then update your antivirus software and scan your system.
