RPC server is unavailable error

P

Pal

I am trying to establish trust between two W2K domain
controllers. I am getting "RPC server is unavailable"
error. I feel this is nothing to do with RPC.

The DNS, WINS is running perfectly on both and ping is
successful from both directions using NetBIOS names. The
two RPC services are in started (Automatic) status on both
machines. My servers are on SP3.

I have also searched thru many KB articles 224370, 329705
etc...but none is of help to resolve this issue.

Any clues, please?

Pal,

This is typically indicative of a DNS issue. Are you trying to create a
trust between two domains in different forests? or two domains in the same
tree? or two domains in the same forest?

If you are trying to create trusts between two domains in the same domain
tree then you should not need to as this is already established. The same
for two domains in the same forest ( unless I am overlooking something ).

I believe that interforest trusts between WIN2000 domains use DNS. If you
remember, a trust between a WINNT 4.0 domain and a WIN2000 domain was based
on NetBIOS. This is now different.

That error could indicate a network communication problem. Is the a
firewall between the two domains? If so that could be blocking RPC traffic.
You may want to consider running portqry to check the ability to communicate
over various ports. For more info about this utility see the following
link. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=832919

RPC errors can also be related to DNS so you should verify that the DCs
resolve to the correct IP. You should also verify that there is not any
stale DNS info in the DNS database or in the DNS cache of the DCs.

Hi there,

There is no firewall between these two networks and these
two belong to two different forests. Ok, if it's a DNS
issue how to troubleshoot? It appears the DNS is okay. How
to identify the DNS is working properly or not. Because I
am able to ping both directions using NetBIOS names.

Rgds.
