Router Issues

Hi, i am currently using a Netgear 4port FireWall router model WGT624,
I am connected to the internet using Bellsouth DSL and i have a 3mbps
connection.

Now my problem is when it rains for long periods of time my router
seems to go on the blitz disconnecting randomly in 4-5 minute
intervals. Now im a gamer so the blitzing of the internet doesnt help
but I also have other people in the house and so i need the wireless to
work. So my solution is to bypass the router and just directly connect
to the modem. Well that works fine till the rain stops. I then
reconnect the router and i dont get internet anymore through wireless
or a direct connection through the router. I go to the command prompt
and ipconfig and it gives me all the ip address's i want so i ping them
and they are connecting in less than 1ms, but i still cant get any
websites through the router. In the Network connections window it says
im connected and is currently sending and recieving bytes, lots of
them. I have done everything i could think of and nothing seems to
work so im begining to think the router is messed up but i dont want to
have to buy a new one because this is not the first router skrewed up
by this, it also happened to a linksys which i promptly got rid of to
get the Netgear. Any suggestions on how to fix the blitzing/ getting
the router to work would be appreciated.

It seems that the rain disrupts the wireless signals. At least that is
usually when the network goes bad at my house.

An ethernet wired connection will still keep working, but of course, you may
not care for the wires running everywhere.

well thats all fine and dandy, but i figured that out, my problem is
the router no longer gets me online even though it says it is connected.

Sounds like the router has lost its ability to logon to the isp. Have you
checked to see if the logon settings are correct?

Yes i tried that checked every setting even reset the thing back to
factory defaults and reconfigured everything still no luck

Alright tell me if this makes sense. I talked to my boss who does
computer repair, networking, telephony stuff and i asked him about the
problem (he was on vacation at the time of the skrew up so i couldn't
call him). He said the Bellsouth Network probably has a short in the
line which something gets wet when it rains and causes the network to
go all glitchy. Well, when this piece gets wet it sends a surge
through the phone line (which i didnt have protected, my bad) and pops
something in the router. Jim, the rain wouldnt mess up your wireless
unless your router was outside and wet... which i am presuming it is
not. So if it is that much of a problem it is the I.S.P.'s problem
hence in my case Bellsouth. I have yet to successfully call them
because when i do i talk to a machine for 10 minutes and i cant stand
machines and dont have the patience to go through all the button
mashing on the phone. I still dont know if this is the problem and
would love any feedback from anyoone on the current theory.

If rain was causing problems on the Bell South wires, then your DSL
access would not work either through router or directly to DSL modem.
Furthermore, such voltages would be made completely irrelevant by the
protector installed (for free) on all phone lines (where their wires
meet yours in NID). You boss should have known this.

If connections only through router go bad during long rain, then rain
is affecting some wires connected to that router. Or maybe even the AC
receptacle is not properly safety grounded to breaker box; in a problem
aggravated by rain.

There is no surge through phone lines causing interruption. Surges
are so often blamed by those who really don't know how electricity
works. Rain could create noise - causing bandwidth or total signal
loss. Also, if there was a surge, that phone company surge protector
has either made it irrelevant or has failed - usually shorting out
phone lines.

You can always make a connection directly via DSL modem? Then modem
and Bell South lines are just fine. Suspect the router, ethernet wires
to that router, or AC to that router.

DSL and router share a common AC receptacle? Also a useful fact.
All safety grounds are properly wired? Another important detail.
