root directory

I have XP Home Edition. Why is there a Winnt directory?
I thought the root should be Windows\. All I have under
my Windows\ folder is a temp folder.

The winnt folder comes from doing an upgrade install as opposed to a clean
install which gives you the windows folder.

Your folder that you installed Windows in is your choice if it is a clean
install. \WINDOWS is the default.
If you have upgraded from some earlier version of Windows (such as NT or
Windows 2000) you may end up with their default of WINNT.
If this is corporate machine again your admin may have chosen to remain
consistent with other machines.
All in all it does not matter.

This was a new load right from Gateway. All I did was a
system restore about 2 months after I bought it.

OK - so Gateway chose to use WINNT as the installation folder - this is not
an issue.
Other then doing a complete reinstallation your self you cannot change this.
It does not effect the ability of the operating system or software to run.
