roaming profile??? do I need this thing? not enough memory to update

T

Tim

I have a workstation that used to be on a network but is no longer and has
not been for a long time. anyway, My hard drive is basically filling up all
the time and I can't figure out where all the storage is being eaten up at.
recently I am getting warning when I shutdown that the there is not enough
memory to up date the roaming profile, there is however still 3 Gigs still
showing on the properties of the hard drive. So I did a little poking and
it looks as though the raoming profile is the same size as the profile I use
and it is almost an exact copy. What do I do and if I don't need it how do
I get rid of it.

You may have to be an admin on the machine to do this but open Registry
Editor and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and change DeleteRoamingCache to '1'. Then reboot. Be careful that deleting
this does not cause you to lose important data and settings.

what is the roaming profile, is it for networks??? if it is too long of an
expanation, can you refer me to some sources that I can read about it.

When you start your pc your preferences and settings are kept on the
hard drive on your pc or workstation, this is called your "Profile". It
tells windows how your pc is set up, wallpaper, customized menus, etc.
If you work in a workplace where there are many pc's/workstations and
you have to work in a different office or location from time to time, if
you want to have the same settings when you work at a pc that is not
your usual pc you can have Windows use your "Roaming Profile" as in you
"roam" around. The Roaming Profile is kept on the server as opposed to
the workstation hard drive and the server dishes it out to you depending
on what pc you're logging on. A simple google search or a search on
Microsoft Technet should return plenty of hits explaining this further
and how to use it.

I don't know if you saw the above, but can I just delete it, I am not on the
network that I used to be on.

thanks, so do I do your directons from earlier or do I just delete, also,
how do I find the roaming profile

I would do what I said earlier and restart because it's a more thorough
solution and takes care of the future to if you have to go back to that
network and may run into this same problem. Let me know if that doesn't
work.

Stan,
thanks alot for the help, I have performed your directions however there is
no Deleteroamingcache in the win logon folder, what do I do to find it, I
have seen many warnings about performing changes in the registry so I
thouhgt I would ask before I go further

Trying clicking Start, selecting Run, typing 'gpedit.msc' and click OK. In
the Group Policy console, expand Computer Configuration>Administrative
Templates>System. Select 'User Profiles'. Double Click "Delete cached copies
of roaming profiles" and configure to your liking. let me know if this works
or not.

Stan, this is really weird, I came inthis morning, turn on my workstation
and a profile disappeared and I confirmed by checking harddrive space. The
problem is that it won't load my profile, and it gives me temp profile.
Office and other programs don't seem to work or have to be re-setup.
Strange huh, anyway I hope you can help me cuz this is pretty important to
me. thanks for you attention, is there any way to get a hold of you directly
so I can fix this reallly quickly,

could you email me at (e-mail address removed) if this is possible

How are you logging in the workstation? In what way do Office and other
programs not work? Can you provide more details? Now that the old profiles
have been deleted. You may have to disable the group policy and begin
building the new profile that you will use going forward. The group policy
cleans up old profiles after each log-off/shut-down.

HMMMM STan, it seems kinda similar, Win is creating a temp profile for me,
so when I go to outlook, it is not configured or anything, word and exel as
me to put in a user name, also, their is nothing in mydocuments.

When I go through explorer, my stuff is still there??? but I believe the
roaming profile is gone.

Is there a way to reverse it and then do it over

S

Stanley Jones [MSFT]

The slate is clean now (old unused roaming profile is gone) and you should
disable the delete roaming profile policy which you enabled if you aren't
going to log-in to that old network again. Then, you should no longer be
using a temp profile. If you mean reverse the delete roaming profile
process, no. You can disable it and move forward. Keep me posted.
