hi all , the last windows update has caused a problem with my desktop. the
update included 3 security upgrades and a tool that runs once to remove
malware or something like that. i believe it is that that is causing the
problem. if i right click on an empty part of my desktop the pointer turns
into the hourglass and then does nothing at all but spin around ( thanks
microsoft ). if i right click anywhere else it is fine.any help out there.
thanks

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:

yes i tried that but shellexview does not list all the right click menus for
some reason. i get different right click menus on different things and shell
only lists the very basic. i.e. if i right click on C drive in the menu is "
explore " , " search " , " browse with paintshoppro " keep in mind the ONLY
time that right click does this is when i click on the background for
desktop. thanks

<excerpt>
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ Background \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers
The only handler present by default (in a clean XP installation) is the New
handler. If you find any additional sub-keys there, it may have be added by
third-party applications. Usually, the software that comes with your graphic
card adds entries to the above location. Here is one instance, an article
from the Intel Graphics Controller website.

I had the same problem but I think it is solved. The problem is linked to the
security update MS06-015 and the file VERCLSID.EXE which was installed by
this update. Two solutions:

Solution 1: Rename the file VERCLSID.EXE to VERCLSID.OLD in the System32
folder and reboot. (Not so good solution for long term but seems to work)

Solution 2: (From Maurice N) If you have an Nvidia graphics card on your
computer, see if the computer also has Nview Destop context menu.
Get the "ShellEXView" utility from this link
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html .
Install it & run it to find out whether you have NView Desktop context menu.
If you do see it listed in ShellEXView, then "disable" it. Then see if your
problems stop.

Find the topic "right mouse button freezes XP" in this General Discussion
area.

Hey Toolman
Ok That should fix my problem, but how do I uninstall the april windows
updates?
I went to Windows problem solver and I got a whole bunch of warnings with
dire consequences. Can some one give me a step by step fail proof idea ?

You don't need to uninstall the updates--Use Kelly's fix.

I tried that Kelly's fix and I also tried to make the modifications in the
registry by hand but it didn't work! I understood it is meant for some HP
hardware? (which I don't have) or what? In my case it is linked to Nvidia
card and the NView Desktop context menu. I think it is necessary to unload
the MS update or disable the NView like I explained. I also read somewhere
that NVidia has published their own fix but I haven't found it. I wonder if
it is similar to the HP fix.
