restoring xp backup in vista

I installed vista over my xp professional and after it would not boot up
missing some driver? So I then did a fresh install of vista it booted fine
then I have a backup of my documents on a different harddrive that was made
by xp but it seems that I can not open that backup with the vista backup
software? What's up microsoft didn't you think muck about that one? How can I
restore the xp backup without reinstalling xp.
