"Restore previous folder window at logon"

T

The Real Bev

When I log back in, I'd like to see the same folders open that were open when
I shut down the last time. When I first installed win2K, this was what
happened. After downloading and installing various "critical" patches, SP4,
"improvements" etc. from the MS site, it no longer worked.

Somebody said that

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View >
Restore previous folder window at logon

would do what I want, but that option is not given there. There appears to be
a similar option in a different place in XP, but that doesn't help.

Anybody know what I need to do and what changed to keep me from doing it after
I did those stupid "upgrades"?

Thanks, saved for when I get the guts to edit the registry. I USED to do it,
surely I can do it again...

Why would the MS critical alterations bother to remove something like that?

I don't understand exactly what you're trying to achieve here. Open
Folders/directories will close after a reboot/shutdown. This is by design.
Maybe I misunderstood the question..?

When I did the original win2K installation, a reboot would cause the folders
open at the last shutdown to open. I like this. After the MS critical
updates/whatever it no longer did that. Nothing opened on reboot.

Some have said that there's an option/preference/setting to enable or disable
this feature. Somebody else told me what to edit in the registry, but I'm
still a bit diffident about doing so. OK?

When I did the original win2K installation, a reboot would cause the folders
open at the last shutdown to open. I like this. After the MS critical
updates/whatever it no longer did that. Nothing opened on reboot.

I have the same situation with W2kPro. Once at Shutdown, my system
retained info on any open folders. On restart or reboot, the system
would reopen those folders.
After some Win 2K updates, that stopped happening. I liked the option,
it was useful.

Tweak UI ver.1.33.0.0 offers this, but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Here's the pop-up help for TUI:

"Check the "Save Explorer window settings" box to save the settings of a
folder when you close it. When you return to the folder, the previous
settings will be restored. When you shut down, Windows will remember
which folders were open and re-open them the next time you log on.
If you uncheck the "Save Explorer window settings" box, then these
settings are not saved when you close an Explorer window or shut down.
This is a per-user setting."

I've also heard of, and experienced, a problem when using Tweak UI, loss
of access to the Control Panel:
"Windows Me and Windows 2000 users should avoid the Show Control Panel
on Start Menu option on the IE tab. We haven't tried it, but deselecting
this box apparently renders the Control Panel completely inaccessible!"
So, do not enable IE> Show Contro Panel on Start Menu!

Registry changes can be risky. You could back up your Registry, then try
the suggested change. Then you'd be safe on a restore.
You can also add more protection using the Backup Wizard : Backup > Only
back up the System State data..

What was the suggested registry edit? I'll try it. :)

Hi,

I followed your suggestion using Regedit, shut down, restarted today,
but it didn't work. (Win 2kPro, SP4)

Using Regedit, I created, in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Adv
anced

Info in right pane:
Name: PersistBrowsers, Type: Reg_Dword, Data: 0x00000001 (1)

Edit > Modify gives: Value data 1 (Base hexadecimal)

Is there an error in what I did?

Thanks.
