Restart or Log Off shuts down computer

When selecting either Restart or Log Off the XP Home Edition computer shuts
down.

I got over 2,000,000 hits on XP shutdown errors. Don't want to read them all
) Can't find the answer in the support pages either. Thanks Scott

I can narrow the potentials down SOME with this link:

It's still potentially a massive research project. If possible then you can
simply backup and attempt a repair install. (I'm not kidding...) Try the
fixes there and if that's a no go then consider either living with it or a
repair installation.

Did you get it squared away? Shutdown errors can be a real pain to diagnose
at times.

No, its my friends and I haven't been back to their house yet. I was hoping
it was an easy fix. After thinking about it, they said they had removed a
virus(es) which I know can cause a lot of weird problems.

But thanks for the sites - I have book marked them and will use them for
future reference. Scott
