Hello,
I have xp sp2 on an AMD k6 360MHz. It works ok but although xp help says the display adapter is compatible and the driver SiS 5598/6326 is installed,
the maximum resolution of 800x600 gives a grainy screen and makes some text difficult to read. Do I need a new video card? I am stuck with this pc until birthday in July!
Thanks in anticipation,
peahouse05:)

Right-click the desktop Properties/Settings/Advanced/Monitor ... you'll see MS has set your monitor to 60Hz ... if you is lucky, you can set it higher ... 75Hz if you can ... if the screen goes Black, wait 15sec and it should return.

It also helps to have the Monitor drivers loaded ... ;)

Hi Muckshifter,
It's set at the maximum available 85Hz. The monitor drivers (is that the SiS 5598/6326?) are loaded.
Thanks.

Well that surprised me somwhat, mind you, I have an Elonex 15" that will stay with me till I die, it can go to 1280x1024 ... :D

but the "grain" effect could simply be due to the DPI of the monitor ... nothing you can do with that. ;)

Hello,
This Packard Bell monitor has to go! Cannot install HP 1350 printer as software does not like the display. Being retired and tight I'm looking at unheard of makes which fit some of the specs mentioned in the thread. There are lots of 17" 1280x1024/65Hz, 0.25mm pitch about at around £70, inc delivery. I have seen a SAMTRON? 78E white 17", 1600x1200,85Hz, 0.25 pitch at £72, inc delivery. They must all work, but to what extent? Any advice very welcome.
Thanks,
peahouse05:D

Yep, they be fine ... all I would say is look for a 3 year On-Site warrantee ... ;)

But even a 12 month will do for that price. :thumb:

Hello All,
New monitor arrived today from Watford Electronics - Aries Energy Pro 17". Connected, worked first time, but still have the same problem, desktop very grainy and icons large.
Tried Display Settings - still won't change from 800x600, 8 colours. Tried disabling video adapter SIS 5598/6326 but this made it worse. Monitor shows as plug and play and drivers appear to be installed when prompted.
Troubleshooting suggested DirectX was not installed so downloaded from MS Updates - I have a mass of files but don't know what to do next.
Any help very welcome,
Cheers,

Hi All,
Have xp sP2 on my old AMD k6 (aka Clunker PC). Tried to find updated driver for on-board graphics but none for SiS 5598/6326 for xp. Got a cheap one on ebay (S3-TRIO 64V+PCI) but, small mistake, there is no XP version driver for this either.
Can anyone recommend one which will work on XP. Only need it to support 1024 resolution.
Thanks
peahouse05:)

Have downloaded 'Version Tracker' from that site. Will try it when I fit the card.

Hi All,
Fitted S3-Trio 64V2/DX graphics card old AMD k6 with xp (SP2), disabled on-board card. No additional driver needed. Changed resolution to 1024 with no problem, but think I will have to ease it back again as these old eyes are struggling with the character size - no, hold on, I'm getting used to it already!
Thanks for the replies guys.
Cheers,
peahouse05:D
