reset the ms word warning dialog box

When the compress picture option is selected, there was a general warning
dialog box saying "Compressing Pictures may reduce the quality of your
images. Do you want to apply picture optimization?"

How to restore this warning dialog to the default?

It is probably stored in the settings sub key of the Word data key in the
registry. Rename this key temporarily to (say) oldsettings, with Word
closed, to check. (see http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm) If
that proves to be the case, then you can delete the old key. Word will
create a new one with installation default settings.

I followed this tip, deleted and re-set the data key, but was still unable to
recover the warning dialog box after the "Don't show me this warning" was
checked. Attached is a visual that shows the process of compressing pictures
complete with pictures. The dialog box I am trying to recover is in step 3. I
have MS Word 2002, and without the APPLY button that is featured in the
dialog box, the compress pictures feature doesn't work for me. Any help, or
step-by-step fix I could follow will be most appreciated. Here's the link to

its safe mode - see

I wonder if repairing Word from Windows control panel > add or remove
programs, and restoring its shortcuts will work?

Thanks for the quick response. In the interim though, the fix to restore the
dialog box that was deleted was in Word help all along…

Use the Detect and Repair option from the Word help menu. On this dialog
box, check the two check boxes that say
1. "Restore my shortcuts while repairing"
2. “Discard my customized settings and restore default settings"

This *restores the settings back to way it was before.

*The big caution is to be sure and back up Outlook folders and know how to
reconfigure your e-mail settings, because along with Word, Outlook
re-installs from scratch. Fortunately for me I did the back-up.
