word is coverting all my pic files automatically?

When I open a picture file Word wants to perform a file conversion on it. I
get the file conversion dialog box asking me "select the encoding that makes
your document readable." I think I tried to convert a pdf file a few weeks
ago. How do i get this to stop. It opens up word file fine, but only for
picture files does it do it.

I tried to set the File->Open to only open word files, but it still brings
up the picture files for file conversion.

Please someone help.

Hi Matt,

You can insert picture files into Word (Insert=>Picture) but Word doesn't know how to 'open' a graphic for editing.

Thanks for your reply. Well that's not the problem. I know that word can do
that, but my problem is when i click on the photo icon in 'my documents' it
does not go to 'picture manager' it opens up in 'word'. Then 'word' wants to
convert it to a word document. It is like 'word' is the default viewer for
pictures. I wanna know if i can stop this from happening.

Somehow, the file association has gotten messed up. You often can fix that
issue by repairing Office (using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel,
which usually fixes the associations: with your version of Office selected,
click on Repair, if available, otherwise, click Change and then Repair). If
repairing Office doesn't fix it, I would then try removing Office Picture
Manager, then putting it back (also using Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel; Picture Manager is in the Office Tools branch of the Office setup
tree).
