Reset from cable to modem

I have a computer with WindowsXP Pro on it. I orginally had is set to a home
network with comcast cable. I sent the computer to my brother in another
state. He is setting up on NetZero. When he goes to change from the cable
setup to modem the modem is grayed out. How does he reset to modem?
