[REQ] word processor

L

Le Loup

Hi !
I'm looking for a free word processor that :
- could read & write MSWord doc files without (too many) errors (I
tried 602 pcsuite and Easy Office, but the result isn't good at all)
- accept the creation of text-tables (I don't care for spreadsheet
table)
- would be "light" (Open Office is too huge)
- doesn't crash all the time (Abiword crashes every 5 minutes, dunno
why)
- run with Win 98SE and 128 Mo Ram

Any idea ?

TIA

I had a few suggestions -- unfortunately, you've already eliminated
them all. I honestly don't think there are any programs left that fit
your requirements.

AbiWord comes the closest, and you're right, it's a little flaky and
unstable. But it's still in development. If you keep an eye out for
new versions, you might eventually find one you're satisfied with.

I am satisfied with Abiword... but my computer not...

<OT ?>
I also tried to install some linux distro, but :
- Mandrake 10 with kde is too heavy (and the user of the computer is
not prepared to xfce or other "exotic" gui)
- Slack 10 didn't recognize the stuff at all... no monitor, no printer,
no sound, no mouse !!!
- Knoppix 3.6 is just fine, but it's so looooooooooong to load Open
Office !!!
Is there a good light distro that could do the job ?
</OT?>

I'm still using StarOffice 5.1 on one of my computers. Only requires
32MB of RAM and 100MB of disc space. Sorry I don't have time to look for
a download location at the moment but I'm sure it is available
somewhere. I picked up a copy on CD at Comdex in 2000. It was free then
and should be free now.
Good luck

I was disppointed with Abiword and moved to Atlantis. I haven't
regretted the move.

Yep !
I'm using Atlantis too... It's a great word processor.
But you can't make tables with it.

Did you try IceWM?
It can easily be made to look Win98-ish and is also very lightweight.

Great! I was looking for StarOffice so I could uninstall my broken
MS Office and use another program.

I was going to look at Pricelessware, when the link came to me via your
message.

The speed of loading OpenOffice is related to your computer speed. The
loading time of OOo is fast if you having a speedy machine.
Another workaround is to auto-load OOo's QuickStarter program and it
will speed up OOo loading time.

Good luck.

The last freeware version of StarOffice is 5.2 which Sun sent free CD
to me by request few year back :).

The software loading is slow because it has to load the some sort of
desktop planform ...
