Req: Mail Solution (may be OT)

Gang:

I have a slightly unusual request. I have a friend who has 3 PC's -
his, his wife's, and one they are using as a file server.

The are using Netzero's paid service for e-mail. They both share one
e-mail account (this is something I do not understand but they want it
this way). They would like a way that they both can use the same e-mail
account from two different machines, WITHOUT using the web interface.

Now my first thought was to have the third machine hold the
mailbox/folders and have Outlook Express (the client they both use) pop
the mail to those folders and have them both map to those folders to
read it. I am not sure if that is possible though. I would have to
research.

The next option I thought of was to have a freeware mail server pop the
mail from their ISP (they have DSL) every 10 minutes or so and store it
locally on the fileserver and use IMAP (?) for both clients to retrieve
the mail.

I just need a simple / free solution. I do not want mail lost and they
tend to get a lot.

Any advice is appreciated.

Did you hear the one about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac?
He had trouble sleeping at night, wondering if there was a dog.

Mayb I should amend this with, if a mail server is needed, which one
would work best for what these people would like to do...

....

Hope you get some help, but I am guessing you will need to post in one of
the technical groups. Have your tried Netzero support? GL!

Not really sure I am following you. I have the same type setup-3
boxes, one for me,my wife and kids. My wife and I share a couple of
accounts. In both Thunderbird and OE6,I have the accounts marked
"leave
on server until deleted"(most ISP's support this). When she checks her
mail(my accounts also) the mail is still available for me to download
at
a later time on my machine. This will work for netzero accounts.
Perhaps
they should look into opening a yahoo,g-mail or hotmail account, they
all
have increased their storage limits. All those accounts are supported
in
Thunderbird using extensions. -max

I have already asked them to get more storage space ... the answer was
no, so leaving the large amount of mail they get on a the internet mail
server is not a good idea. That is why I thought about having it
downloaded with a mail server, but that may be over kill.

Thanx anyway.
