Repost- Program Combatibility Issues in XP

S

Shaun

When I try to run Any Win 95 or 98 games in
Combatibility
Mode I get this message

"16 bit Windows Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Misrosoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application."

With two options: Close and Ignore.
And choosing dual modes does not work.

No, they are not DOS games, they are both Win 95. And
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;324767 will not work either.

-----Original Message-----
Hi Shaun,

Are those Windows 95 games perhaps really DOS games?

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available,
or search at:
http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a :)
With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/tr ial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and
http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm
For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

Most of the "older" games will run perfectly well on Windows XP. Some need
to use Compatibility Mode (details are in Help and Support), and this
TechNet article will help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/lgcyapps.mspx

Basically, what Compatibility Mode does is allow the older program to
"think" it is being installed on the operating system for which it was
designed. You also need to pay attention to the game's requirements, and
some need to be installed using Compatibility starting with the installation
itself by going to Start/Run/Browse and locating the install.exe or
setup.exe file on the root of the CD. You can right-click that file, follow
the pattern to use Compatibility Mode and have it install.

After the install, make sure to update the program from the web site of the
creator, then right-click the icon you'll use to launch the game and make
sure the proper Compatibility settings are ready. You also need to make
sure the proper display and color settings are selected.

Did you install the game using Compatibility Mode from the beginning? Some
games "install" okay, the user can switch modes after the installation, but
they fail to run. That's why I included the information about using
Compatibility Mode for the actual installation. Now, if you've done that, I
seem to have missed that point.

No problem, Shaun. These programs don't happen to be DOS-only, are they?
If so, check from some of Jimmy's S.'s previous posts in this newsgroup for
guidelines. Otherwise, we should maybe see if this Knowledge Base article
will assist you: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=301911
There are couple troubleshooters included in the article.

Remember, to install in Compatibility Mode, go to Start/Run with the CD in
the drive, then select Browse. Find the install.exe or setup.exe file on
the root of the CD, then right-click it. From there you do exactly the same
thing as you would if the game installed without using Compatibility and you
were just clicking the link or icon you use to launch the game.

Make sure you select everything appropriate, such as display settings,
color, etc. If you don't, it won't work.

If you're still having issues, please post back with the names of the games,
and perhaps we need to discuss updates for they from the software company's
web site.
