Replacing the parent domian controller

R

Ripul Handa

Hi,

I am new to the Windows 2000 Active directory
administration and need some urgent help. I want to
replace my top level parent domain controller (machine)
with a new high end server. The exisitng machine acting
as a parent DC is not robust enough so I want to replace
it with a new powerful server. Any recommendations on how
to start this process. Any pointers or information would
be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Ripul

Install the DC as a second DC in an existing domain.
See:

Transfer all FSMO roles from the old DC to the new DC.

See:

Move the Global Catalog to the new server.

See:

Install DNS on the new server and make it AD integrated along with the
original DC's DNS service. Allow to replicate.

Run dcpromo on the old DC to remove AD then remove it from the domain.
