Replacing 'explorer' and 'explorer.exe'

Okay, I used GANT 2 Ocean (from devilindisguise) to replace my icons, which
was cool for a while. Then I uninstalled it, and all traces of it were gone
except for 'explorer' and 'explorer.exe' in C:\WINDOWS still being
GANT-inized. And I tried to replace the file with the original Windows
explorer.exe (from a very near to fresh installation on another computer, i
put explorer.exe in a zip and saved that to a disk on that computer, then put
the new explorer on my Desktop on the comp I'm trying to replace it) but
Windows won't allow it.

I guess I would have to find a way to disable this control, then go in and
replace a core system file. Anyone know how to do that? Or any other
assistance in the matter?

Btw, I can't go back to a system restore.. For some reason I can't go past
January 2005 on the Restore calendar and I installed GANT shellpack last
December.
