Windows Explorer hangs when I double click files to open them

Here is the error from the Application part of Event Viewer:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Winlogon
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1002
Date: 21/01/2009
Time: 10:23:49 PM
User: N/A
Computer: THFS
Description:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every time I double click a file in Windows Explorer (I.e. My Computer, My
Documents, etc.), Windows Explorer freezes and the file does not open. Then
when I click the X on the top right of the window to kill off Explorer, it
closes immediately, but I lose my taskbar and Start menu for a few seconds as
explorer.exe restarts itself. Then my PC goes back to normal.

The only way for me to open files right now is to go into the application
and open it from there - so for example, to open a Word doc, I have to first
open Word, then go to File>Open instead of double clicking the file in My
Computer.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.
