Replacement for X-Setup?

B

Bob Adkins

I've used it forever. Yes, it's primarily a program
launcher/wallpaper changer/fifty million other things. Not really a
tweaker. Very hard to configure but it's powerful. I've never gotten
around to doing much more with it than creating popup menus for some
of my more commonly used programs.

Ever mess with all the button launch features? After a ton of tweaking, you
can make a very nice, auto-hiding button launcher. But what a pain!

Exactly my style. :)

Yep, I tried it yesterday. Kinda fun, actually. Nicely done for a DOS
programs. Good tweaker program. Has some unique tweaks listed.

True. Here's the link for anybody looking on:

Probably a good idea to get this one. It may be the last of the ver. 6
series.

I've only just heard about x-setup and it seems the new 6.5 pro is out
today. Can you tell us a little from your experience about the program - the
negatives/positives ?

What is this reference to M$.NET Framework in the post above & should it be
avoided - or is that just referring to the alternative/replacement to
x-setup?

George Smilianov's program might require the .net framework to be
installed. He recommended his program as a possible alternative to
X-Setup.

As for pluses and minuses, the only negative I've got is to not use
X-Setup to remove the "Files or Folders" entry from the start menu's
"Search" category. I did that and it screwed things up somehow, then
when I undid it in X-Setup I wound up with two entries in the "Search"
category, one is "For Files or Folders", the other is "Files or
Folders". They both do the same thing. When I tried to contact XTeq to
make them aware of the bug, I got no response. Now following up on it
doesn't interest me anymore.

Yeah, that's why I haven't done it yet! But I'd like to!

Now that I'm moving to Windows 2000 and XP (not to mention Linux which
is irrelevant to this), I may try several program launchers and see if
they can match what I want from PowerPro while being easier to use.

I want to ask you what do you think about the program?

Well, to be honest, I found it to be fairly useless... I downloaded it, installed it,
and tried it. I found that it contained hardly anything - It's not what I would call a
replacement for X-Setup not even a very early version of Xsetup...

While running it for the first time, the ONLY useful item that I found was a check box
to make open folders reopen after a restart - normal behavior of Win9x, that for some
reason disappears for an unknown reason, I like this behavior and have never seen anything
on it. I set the check mark, hit apply and rebooted, hoping that some open folders would
reappear as they should... They did not... So again, I have no use for the program...

There is no information of what any of the options do, there are no useful options, -
the Check for Updates feature does not function and worse gives no useful information or
feedback. The program in all, seems like a half baked alpha version that should be named
version .7 at best...

All in all, it looks like a very bad clone of an early version of Xsetup missing all
useful information, missing all useful tools, and lacking any help whatsoever.

The Help file is little more than a blatant self aggrandizing advertisement and ego
stroking of the author... If the program actually did anything useful I'd be more
inclined to believe some of the hype in the so-called "Help" file...
