Renaming My Computer doesn't hold

Renaming My Computer, My Documents or the Recycle Bin only lasts for one
session of Windows. When I log on the next time, they all revert to default
names. Anyone knows why?

Note: Customized names are stored in the same key as customized icons -- don't let the primary mention of icons make you think this info doesn't apply.

I had a similar problem & posted what I found here:

http://www.google.com/groups?hl=en&...ff&[email protected]

The fix is:

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Navigate to:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Clsid"
(HKCU = HKEY_CLASSES_CURRENT_USER)

Right-click the folder icon for this key & select 'Permissions'

Click 'Advanced' -> click 'Add' -> type "System" -> click 'OK'

Put a check in the 'Deny' column for the 'Set Value' permission.

'OK' your way out.

Thanks a lot for your great help! That did the trick.

The funny thing is that the problem was only there for the Admin user. The
"limited account" users could customize their stuff and keep it too,
although their permission settings on
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Clsid were
identical. No scheduled tasks were run, either.

I do have a Nvidia card (GeForce3 Ti 500), so I guess I do have their
software. The behavior I described happened on a fresh installation of XP
Pro with drivers 6.14.10.5216 coming from Microsoft through Windows Update
(kosher version :)), not Nvidia. The same continued after I upgraded to
Nvidia's very latest 56.72.

Can you tell me a bit more? Which software? What exactly is faulty?
Thanks and regards.

It's because you have a faulty software from nvidia.

I suspect it's their desktop software. I use old versions of the driver.

If you disable the nVidia Helper service or set it to manual, then it
won't rename the icons back to their default.

Thanks a lot.
One would expect nVidia to warn about it. BTW, what is the Helper service
there for in the first place?

Supposedly it provides Help when you have the driver properties open.
That's more or less what they said although I don't have the exact quote
anymore.
