Renaming JPEG files easily

I have a number of pictures in JPEG and as is the case the JPEGS are all
named as 001,002 etc. I am looking for a way to easily change the names of
the files/pis easily by using some kind of a merge program. My thought is to
creat a new name in an excel spreadsheet for each of the files. Then somehow
use that file to create new names for the pics.

Would appreciate any help. This will save me hours of work.

John,

ACDSee v3.10 is not only a great program for viewing pictures, but it has
a rename file/s feature. You can select multiple files and rename with a
click of the mouse. ACDSee v3.10 is by far the best and simplest version
release. Get it here http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=acdsee

here is the serial needed:

Nothing against ACDSee. Nice to have but you have to pay for it. The site
that John Inzer recommended will give you XP directions to rename and
control slide shows with XP for free and some features are even better than
ACDSee, at least for renaming and controlling slide show display on your
computer if using XP.

Read my reponse again, I provide a url to download ACDSee, and provide a
serial. Total cost of ownership = $0.00
