Renaming Domain

I have a windows 2000 domain that was set up before i was
at this company. It was set up with AD and everything.
THey now want the domain name changed from *****.gov to
******.com. Is there any way to do this without
reinstalling the whole system. If so how? There is a lot
of information on this system that would be lost if this
system has to be rebuilt. We are also having trouble
joining computers to this old domain name so we are hoping
that with the name change it will slove those problems.

This may be possible if the domain is still in mixed mode. See:

However, the above procedure is not without risk. You might want to
consider upgrading to Windows Server 2003 functional level. See:
