rename network printer

Is it possible to rename a network printer on a WinXP client from "HPLaser on MyServer" to a plain and simple "HPLaser"? And yes, it is a shared printer on the server which I install on the WinXP client, but I really need to have the name changed for an older software to recognize it... To be specific: I don't want to change the share name from "HPLaser" to "Laser", but I need to get rid of the idiotic "on MyServer" string attached to the printer name in Control Panel - Printers
If it's not possible, can anyone explain why Microsoft disabled this option in Win2000/WinXP
Thanks
