Printer problem and Solution

B

Bernard Liengme

Home network with 3 XPs (2 with a printer set to shared) and 1 Vista
computer
Tried to give Vista PC access to shared printer on one of the XP units
Of course, I tried Add Printer | Network
Total failure - no printers detected
So I lied: Add Printer | Local; name of port \\Bernard\B's HPLaser
(the XP unit is called Bernard and the printer's share name is "B's
HPLaser")
This worked just fine. Wonder why?

I'm having the exact same problem (I'm trying to access an HP Laser Jet 1012
connected to an XP PC from my new Vista laptop) and would like to try your
solution, but I don't understand what you did. Can you give more details?
Thanks.

Thank you so much. The printer i installed didn’t have downloadable Vista
drivers so i hooked the printer to my laptop installed it then plugged the
printer back into the host pc then i went back to Pc#2 and clicked Start/
Printers and Faxes, right hand click on the printer and select properties
then click the port's tab at the top then select Add Port... in the port
types box leave local port selected then click New Port
and type the path like this "\\Hostpc\Printer name" without quotes
then select OK and make the printer your default printer
