How do I uninstall Windows Messenger? I see no entry for it in the Control
Panel Add/Remove list.

is there some reason you want to remove instead of just disabling it.

if using XP with SP2, it is possible to use MS software to REMOVE it.

do not remember the exact wording but its something like Default Programs, be very careful.

Hello,

Removing Windows Messenger may prevent you from running other applications.

See this thread for more information.

Hi, thanks. I had a feeling it might be somehow part of XP. I'll just remove
it from the tray. I hope.

It looks like it's built into XP, so disabling it would be fine. I just
signed out via the menu attached to the tray icon. It seems to be gone from
sight. Don't see it elsewhere. Out of sight, out of mind?

to insure, next time you see it in the tray, use its options to disable running at startup and run in background

I hope that's a matter of using the Exit choice on the right-click menu.
That caused the icon to disappear from the tray. If it's still lurking, I'd
like to clobber it.

right click and Open, then select Options Properties I believe it is.
one of the tabs when it is OPEN will have the options to load at startup and run in background. just make sure they are unchecked. close Messenger and problem should be over. other problem might be if you have the option check in OE to run messenger.

Windows Messenger can be uninstalled from a Windows XP computer, however it
is not recommended. I suggest that you disable the Windows Messenger Service
by using these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Select "Administrative Tools".

Note in Windows XP Home edition, Administrative Tools is in Performance and
Maintenance
3. Click on "Services".
4. Right-click on "Messenger" and Select "Stop".
To permanently disable Messenger:
5. Right-click on "Messenger" and Select "Properties".
6. In the Startup type list, click "Disabled".
7. Click on OK.

However, if you would like to uninstall it, then you would have first make
it appear in the list of programs you can add and remove from Windows. In
order to do so, please use these steps:

1. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\inf (substitute the correct drive letter for your
version of Windows).
2. If the "inf" folder is not visible in C:\WINDOWS\, please make it appear
by:

a. Click on Tools from the Menu bar and click on Folder Options.
b. Click on the View tab, and select on "Show hidden files and folders".
3. From the "inf" folder, open sysoc.inf.
4. You will see a line that reads:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

5. Change this line to:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
6. Now, Windows Messenger will appear in Add/Remove Windows Components under
Add or Remove Programs.
7. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
8. Click on Add or Remove Programs and click on Add/Remove Windows Components.
9. Remove Windows Messenger and click OK.

Windows Messenger Service is not the same thing as Windows Messenger.
the service is a net notification tool for broadcasting across networks. frequently used by porno distributors.
