Remove Windows Messenger

L

Lil' Dave

MS messenger (msmsgs.exe) kept trying to access the internet per ZA Pro.
No, I was not using MS messenger in any manner. It took awhile but found
where it was loaded by the registry. Removed this entry.

This occurred (circumstantial?) after I allowed windows to do a whole mess
of critical updates at once. One of them was for MS Messenger I found
later. I did not have ***MS***messenger installed per add/remove programs.
Yes, there's an entry for that in add/remove programs at the very bottom on
this platform. I also uninstalled the MS Messenger critical update ( no
effect) prior to deleting the registry entry previously mentioned. And, in
ZA Pro settings, denied any future access for msmsgs.exe to the internet and
LAN. No, I don't ever intend to allow remote help for my windows
installation.

Anyhoo, downloaded SP2 last night and let it install. All seems okay, and
ZA Pro is not presenting any sign of msmsgs.exe trying to access the
internet. Folks using XP's firewall, either version, would have never have
caught this... PC is running fine without msmsgs.exe accessing the
internet.

Hi,

Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger? They are two different things, and the
former should not be removed. The latter can be removed using the Windows
Components section of Add & Remove in the Control Panel providing at least
SP1 is installed. If it is not, you can copy/paste this into a start/run
prompt to remove it:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
