I need to point out to you that this newsgroup deals only with problems
with Windows Mail in Vista.
You are using Windows Live Mail, the correct newsgroup for you is
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop.

Not sure why you'd want to do that, but you can hide all the folders by going
to View, Layout, uncheck "Folder list".

There is a very good reason to hide the local folders: they are totally
useless when accessing an IMAP server.

I also came here looking for the solution for the same issue. I use gmail as
a mail integrator for all of my accounts and it turns all of your pop mail
into a universally accessible IMAP store.

Problem is that Windows Mail (and, it seems, all Microsoft mail products),
seem to insist on displaying the unused "local folders" tree.

You are right. The email world is still rather POP-centric.
You should be able to collapse Local Folders so that it only takes up one line.

I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it when I was trying to find out the same thing - can the Local Folders be removed from Windows Mail? I too primarily use IMAP email accounts so this would be a useful feature.

After quite a bit of research I have come to the conclusion that the easiest fix is to simply collapse the Local Folders folder and to set one of your IMAP accounts as the default account (right click on the folder - set as default).

Now, Windows Mail will open the InBox of the designated IMAP account with the Local Folders folder collapsed.

Good enough for me. Hope that helps others.
