Remove Roaming Profiles

We are currently using roaming profiles for all our desktop Windows 2000
users.
All our laptop/remote users have Windows XP.
After two years of using Windows 2000 some roaming profiles are now too
large and take too much time to load.
I think I want to stop using Roaming Profiles and go with Group Policy
Folder Redirection.

How do I stop using roaming profiles?
Do I simply remove the path to the profile in the Properties of each user in
Active Directory?
What are the consequences?
Will the profiles simply revert to local policies?

Isn't Folder Redirection a more lean method of simulating Roaming Profiles?
It sounds like a viable alternative to our Roaming Profiles, especially
since the remote laptop users can benefit from the Offline Folders
functionality that suppossedly comes with Folder Redirection.

I'm confused by what I'm reading about these subjects and I'm nervous about
going forward with my plan to remove the roaming profiles.
Can someone please explain the differences and benefits of removing roaming
profiles and employing folder redirection instead?

Thank you.
