Removable drive not appearing

M

Martin

Running XP Home - when I connect a removable flash disk
through a USB port on my machine, it installs correctly
but a removable disk icon doesn't appear in my list of
drives - unlike the machine next door which does (running
same OS). Why does it work on one machine and not the
other.

Thanks

Mart

Hi Martin,

To fix this issue, reinstall USB Port in Windows XP.

1. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then System
icon.
2. This opens the System properties window.
3. Select Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
4. Click "+" beside the USB device you want to uninstall.
5. Right-click the USB device and select Uninstall.
6. Restart the system.

Windows will redetect the USB device on restart.

Thanks,

Sorry... forgot to say that I'd already done that - took
out all the USB stuff in fact - Win did a reintall but no
joy.

I have the same problem with removable drives on a system that was
networked with mapped drives F-J with a C drive, D cdrom and E cdrom
drive. The computer wanted to allocate the removable drive to drive F
which was occupied by a mapped F drive.
Solution, go to administrative tools in control panel, click on computer
management and select disk management. Your removable disk will appear,
right click it and select a high drive letter (ie more Z than A).
Hopefully this should do the trick. Do let us know at the NG
Regards
