Remote Procedure Call(RPC)service terminated?????

S

Shannon

Just re-installed XP OS and seems good. Online a few
minutes trying to download software updates for
windows,Earthlink, etc and system pops up error message
saying NT Authority\System error will shut down in 30
seconds, save files, etc. Because Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service terminated unexpectantly. System then
restarts. Any clues on solution, patch, setting, or
something. BTW- Windows XP Home edition. Dell 4550 P4,333
Thanks for ANY help.

Shannon;
You connected an unprotected computer to the internet and most likely
the Blaster worm got in, it only takes a few seconds without a
firewall.
DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network IMMEDIATELY.

If necessary to stop the reboot process:
Start/Run
Type "shutdown -a" ENTER

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY, before connecting to the
internet:

VERY IMPORTANT to follow ALL steps, closing ports or installing the
patch is NOT enough.
Download the patch and regedit referenced in the article below.
You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and burn to CD or
save on floppies.
Each file is small enough to fit on a floppy.

Follow this to clean and protect your computer:

After this is resolved prevent similar occurrences by installing ALL
Critical Updates from Windows Update.
Keep antivirus up to date and run at least weekly.
Install or enable a firewall.
