Remote From Office to Home

My post seems to backwards of what most want to do. Here is my setup:
At home, I have a desktop pc running xppro connected to internet by cable
modem and using dlink di-524 router for home workgroup. I also have a laptop
that i take to work. I have no problem connecting remotely to the desktop
from the laptop when I am at home (on my lan). I am not sure what I need to
do to connect to the home desktop from the laptop when I am at work. my
laptop also runs xppro and at work I connect to a domain either wireless or
wired.

One thing that would help is the concept of VPN. It appears that one can set
up a vpn on windows or with the router. I assume these would be 2 totally
different creatures. I assume it would be best set it up with my router. Also
for port forwarding, I see 3389 a lot for the firewall, but have seen another
port commonly listed. (1723 for PPTP?)

Would I use two different connections - one from home to home and one from
work to home with RDC?

This will get me started. I am sure I will need to provide more info - just
let me know. Tks.

Setup the router to forward the port 3389 to your home system.
Setup the router - if you can - with either a static IP or a dynamic DNS
name (dyndns.org.)
Know the static IP or dynamic DNS name of the router.

Since the Remote Desktop already works at home - using the external IP of
the router with the above accomplished would be just like sitting at home
and remoting into the machine from there.
