Remote Desktop

I have a home network with a desktop running XP-Home that I use for storage
and as a fax server; a laptop which is my primary station running XP-Pro; and
two printers. I am using my laptop to access my desktop within the LAN via
Remote Desktop. I loaded SP2 into my desktop and now my remote desktop
capability from my laptop to my desktop dows not work. I pinged the desktop
from my laptop and got through. I checked the firewalls on both machines and
everything seems to be in order.

Am I missing some steps or procedures. Please help.

XP Home doesn't have a Remote Desktop server capability -- only XP Pro
does. How were you controlling the desktop from the laptop before
loading SP2?

Assuming that the desktop is running XP Pro, follow these steps:

1. Right click My Computer, click Properties | Remote, and make sure
that Remote Desktop is enabled.

2. Go to Control Panel | Security Center | Windows Firewall.

3. If the Firewall is set to "On (recommended)":

a. Un-check "Don't allow exceptions"
b. Click the Exceptions tab.
c. Put a check mark in the box for Remote Desktop.

If the desktop runs a different firewall (Norton Internet Security,
Sygate Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, etc), configure that firewall to
allow Remote Desktop connections, and turn off the Windows Firewall.
