Remote Desktop Problem and Could not start the Terminal Services service on Local Computer.

Dan

I have an issue on a WinXP Pro PC whereby the user has, in the past,
been able to successfully connect to her work PC from home using
remote desktop. Ever since a piece of Sonicwall VPN software was
installed on her PC, she has lost the ability to connect to her PC
from home but she can still connect to other PCs from her work PC
successfully. The Sonicwall software was recently removed and I
thought it would solve the issue but it did not.

After checking to be sure that RD was enabled, a valid user was setup
to connect and a port was passed through the NAT router to her PC, I
decided to attempt to connect to her PC from another PC on the LAN and
was unable to connect. I traced it to an issue on her PC. I
discovered that the Terminal Services service is not started and when
I attempt to start it, I receive the following message.

----
Could not start the Terminal Services service on Local Computer.

Error 123: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is
incorrect.
----

I've searched all over the Internet and cannot find an answer to this
issue so I'm hoping someone can lend a hand. Is there anyway to
remove and reinstall the Terminal Services components in XP Pro
without doing an XP reinstall?

Thanks,

Dan

You can try locating the TSOC.INF file in the Windows\Inf file. Right click
it and select Install.

Dan,

See if termsrv.dll is found in C:\Windows\System32\. If not, extract a copy
from CD. Also, run SFC /SCANNOW.

Gentleman,

Thank you for the advice. I will give these things a try and report
back. I'm trying to avoid a "Repair Install..." at all costs but
we'll see what happens.

Guys,

Just wanted to write back and let you know that the issue has been
resolved. The TERMSRV.DLL file was in the Windows\System32 folder and
seemed to be of the correct size and date/time and attempting the
install on TSOC.INF didn't seem to do anything. The last thing I did
was run the SFC /SCANNOW and then restarted the PC and the Terminal
Services service showed up as started after this. Your suggestions
and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all!
