remote desktop has strange effect on numlock and taskmanager

I'm using XP Pro SP2 on my desktop, and XP Home SP2 on my notebook. I'm
finding that two very strange things happen when I connect to the desktop
from the notebook.

1. the numlock state is changed. I always keep numlock set, but after using
remote desktop, the numlock is unset.
2. taks manager is frozen. The taskmanager icon is displayed in the
notification tray, but clicking on it does nothing. I have to start a new
instance of task manager. I am able to kill the first instance using the
new instance.

Neither of these issues occurs as while I'm using the desktop directly. I
work in the office Mon - Thr with no problem. I telecomute on Friday and
use remote desktop to access the desktop from home using my notebook. When
I return to the office on Monday I have to set NumLock, and start a new
instance of Task Manager.

Desktop system is completely up to date with hot fixes.

Is anyone aware of known issues in for either of these?

The system you connect to (in this case, your desktop) will take the num
lock status of your laptop (your laptop is acting as the keyboard, so if you
turn caps lock on, it'll be reflected on the desktop, and same with num
lock).

This seems to be by design.
