Remote Desktop Admin Connection Problem

I will attempt to be as detailed as possible...
I have 2 XP pro SP1a machines sitting behind a LinkSys
broadband router I would like to connect to via RDS.

1. I have changed the RDS port on XP-2 to be 3388 (via
instructions from MS Knowledge Base) XP-1 remains 3389.
2. In the router I have enabled and configured forwarding -
port 3389 over TCP goes to XP-1 192.168.1.100(static IP
port 3388 over TCP goes to XP-2 192.168.1.101(static IP)
I have aslo tried entering this for Upnp forwarding.
DHCP is enabled but the pool starts at 190.168.1.105 -
so these pc's are exempt.
3. Tested Local/LAN connectivity via RDS Connection to
both from an XP Pro laptop.
[email protected]:3389 connects and allows me access.
[email protected]:3388 connects and allows me access.
So far so good.
4. Tested internet connectivity via RDS Connection to
both from an XP Pro at work.
[email protected].???:3389 connects and allows me access.
[email protected].???:3388 I get "The client could not
connect to the remote computer. Remote connections
might not be enable or..." blah blah blah.
Not so good.
Well theres my problem. The pc listening on the default
port works fine. The non-default doesn't accept internet
connections but will Lan connections. I am at my wits
end, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Al,
First off thanks for the response.
Attempted test you recommened and it failed on 3388, and
succeeded on 3389 - just as we suspected. With that
verified has to be either the machine is misconfigured or
the router is not forwarding the requests properly. I
tend to lean toward the former because the router is
working perfectly with all other forwarding rules.
The router is LinkSys BEFSR41/1.44.2z Dec 13 2002. Yes, I
realize the firmware appears old but the newest revision
totally hoses the router - nothing works so I dropped it
down one.
I will look further into the configuration the the 3388
box and update the thread.
Again thanks.

Hmmm... Try this telnet test to the port that is failing to see what happens...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;Q187628

Use the command string 'telnet tserv 3388'...

If that fails, you might try another port on the router.
I presume your using the latest firmware?
What model Linksys? Have you tried a simple power reset
of the router, ie. turn it off then back on?
