Remote connection calls for terminal server

Hello all,

Is there any way I can by pass the requirement for the terminal server. I
two desktops and two laptops on a network and I am attempting to connect to
one the desktops remotely but I keep getting an error message say there are
no terminal servers in the network, the remote connection is enable on all
the pc's. One more question how do I set up one of my pc's as the terminal
server

Not enough information on what you are actually trying to do and from where
and how you are trying to do it.

Right now we know you have two laptops and two desktops.
We can also assume they are all on the same local area network.

We do not know the Operating Systems on any of these systems.
We do not know if you are trying to use Remote Desktop or Remote Assistance.
We do not know if you are trying to do this while on the Local Area Network
or outside of it.
We do not know if you have opened up the proper ports in any software
firewalls you may have running.
We do not know if you have forwarded the ports through any NAT device/router
you might have (if trying to do this from outside the LAN.)

Hey thanks,

Ok they all have WinXP
I am trying to remote desktop
Inside the LAN
I don't even know if I opened up the ports. I changed the firewalls to allow
exceptions for both remote assitance and remote desktop

My ultimate goal is to set up the network so jump on and monitor kids, see
what they see, and shut the computer down and bed time.

If your trying to browse for RDP enabled PCs on your home work group
environment then the short answer is you can't. With that said you can apply
a registry hack that allows this.

Personally I think your better off using some sort of "Parental Control
software" on the kids PCs including setting them up as limited users. See
some of my thoughts on that issue in this old BBR thread...

Remote Desktop is not really geared to monitoring a remote PC like you want
to do...

Only XPpro supports hosting, Any version (includes W98SE) can be the
remote logging in. Are all the machines be monitored XPpro?

I don't think RDC is what you want.
It takes over, as in locks the (kids) screen.

Try one of the VNC family like tight VNC. There is a little icon in
the hosts tray that will change color when a connection is
established.Moving the mouse will let them also know someone is
watching <g>.

Thank you for the reply.
I don't want to hide it from them. I told the kids I wouldn't hide anything
from them. Beside I want to now what mom and I are capable of.

This worked. There is just one thing. Only one pc is running xpPro so it is
the only one I can set up remote users on. Thank for all the help everyone. I
don't think there is a way around this one, is there? If not I will just look
into the other software mentioned in this thread.
