Remote access win2000 -> winXP (or WinXP->WinXP)

Hi to everybody,
Was wandering to ask if there is a way to access and
remotely control win xp machine without using third party
tools like "pc anywhere" and alike.
What I wanna accomplish is just to help my mother to take
care of her machine - we live in different towns and both
have cable internet access.
The OS I am using most of the time - win2000.

Thanks for your suggestions.

If your mother is running XP Pro you could use Remote Desktop. Look at these links for help.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/remotedesktop/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/focuson/remotedesktop.asp

XP Home does not support the use of Remote Desktop in a "host" mode. So, with that said...you can
use VNC or NetMeeting Remote Desktop to access/control a XP Home box remotely...

Get the VNC software from...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

For help with NetMeeting RDS look at this KB article. NetMeeting is built-in to XP and can not be
upgraded...

Note that the VNC data stream is *NOT* encrypted so that is a potential security problem if you use
if over the public internet. Some folks run VNC through VPN tunnels to get around that issue.

One last alternative, *IF* you both use XP Pro/Home (and you mention that possibility) is Remote
Assistance. The nice thing about RA is the Novice, your mother, can watch while you, the Expert,
takes over control of her PC and fixes things. Its a good "Help Desk" tool...
