Remote Access Connection Manager won't start

R

Rick

I can't set up a connection to the internet. I use AOL
and it won't let me use the internet. I believe the
problem is in my installation of Windows XP. AOL does not
show as a connection in windows. My LAN connection now
shows but AOL does not. When I try to add a internet
connection I get an error that states that a service is
not turned on. Upon investigation it appears that the
Remote Access Connection Manager service is stopped. When
I try to start it I get an "Error #5: Access is denied".
I cant't figure out how to start it so that I can add the
internet to my setup. Is this a security setting issue or
a corrupt configuration of some kind? Would re-installing
windows fix it or is there some other way. Thanks.

This is the usual reason:

Ron,

Thanks for the reply but I still don't know what to do. I
do not recall doing a "restore" but I did do what the
Microsoft Support Tech called "repair installation" to fix
another network related problem. That did not fix the
problem but we did do it. We had to unistall and
reinstall the NIC driver. That fixed the problem. This
current problem showed up right after the fix of the other
so it makes sense that the "repair installation" with may
have been similar/same as a restore may have caused the
problem. What should I do now?

Thanks,

Rick

What should I do now?

Simply follow the advice in the 'Resolution' section of the KB article:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, reinstall SP1 for Windows XP.

Ron,

Sorry. I replied before looking at the link to the
Knowledge Base article. This looks like the right
answer. All seems to fit, even the error messages. Since
I can't load SP1 without access to the internet (even with
the downloaded file) I will edit the registry per the
instructions. Thanks again!
