reinstalling windows xp

I have windows xp home edition with sp1. What i would like to do is create
a fresh reinstallation, hopefully returning my laptop to a virgin state. I do
not want to create a new partition. I have attempted to start a
reintallation, but my laptop has locked on a blue screen. it states "Please
wait while set up formats partition. CARTITION1[NEW (RAW)]
76309 MB (76308 FREE)
ON 76317 MB DISK 0AT Id 0ON BUS 0 ATAPI [MBR].

On the bottom of the page it states setup is formatting

Find a util to zero out your drive to bring it to factory fresh state.
Then, use your recovery CD(s).
