Have 12G hard drive laptop. I'm trying to install fresh
version of XP, but during installation, I get msg about
installing XP in certain partition: 11510MB DISK 0 at
ID0 on bus 0 on ATAPI [MBR] c:\Partition1 [FAT 32] 11510
B (7072 MB FREE). What does that mean? This was a used
laptop that I purchased so I don't know how the previous
owner configured it. ANY SUGGESTIOMS? THANKS IN
ADVANCE :)

Use the following procedure for a "clean install" of Windows XP:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

This is pretty lengthy, so bear with me. Okay, I went
into BIOS but don't think I can boot from CD. Options
were set at follows: Multibay-first, Hard Drive-second,
Ethernet-third. I left it as is. I ran setup from the
CD, selected the drive to partition and install XP on,
chose to convert drive to NTFS, chose option to have all
existing folders/files, etc to be deleted. Went through
entire 40min process. Was not asked for product key, but
was asked to register online. IS THIS NORMAL? Anyway,
after I selected to register software at a later date, I
began to install Wireless G card to reconnect to home
network and internet. I just happen to look in the "My
Computer" folder and VIOLA! all my old existing files and
folders were still under Local C drive. ANY IDEA WHAT
HAPPENED AND WHY? I guess I will have to redo the entire
process, but I dread this happening again. Any
suggestions? By the way, my laptop doesn't have a floppy
so after reading previous suggestions, I can't create
boot disks -- unless I use my removable pin drive. ALL
SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE :)
