Reinstalling Win 2000 Professional

R

Robin G.

I recently purchased a refurbished laptop that came with
Win 2000 installed. As I began to bring on peripherals and
other programs, a screen informed me that certain elements
of the installed Win 2000 were missing and could cause it
to become unstable. I was advised to reinstall the
operating system from the CD-ROM. The laptop did not come
with a CD-ROM, so I went out and bought one.

My basic question is do I need to uninstall the existing
Win 2000, or does loading from the CD overwrite it? Also,
is it correct that I need to uninstall my anti-virus
program (or any other programs?) first and reinstall them
when the new Win 2000 is in place?

Since I'm only moderately literate on this subject, I'm
wondering if the install steps are spelled out in the CD,
or do I just hit Start and Run? Or what?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Plug and play should prompt you for the CD when it needs to install a driver
from it. Not all drivers for peripherals come on the Windows CD, but most
peripherals come with their own CDs. But that's a separate issue.
Reinstalling Windows is an option, but at that point, you will have no
installed applications or antivirus in that installation. Unless you have
media for everything you want to keep, a clean install means you lose
something. Now, if the media did not come with the laptop, you may not have
the license to use it. It would certainly be hard to show that you do.

You need to perform an inplace upgrade here is how to do
that.
To perform an inplace upgrade, follow these steps:
Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM
or DVD-ROM drive.
In the CD Autorun dialog box, click Install Windows 2000.
In the Windows 2000 Setup dialog box, click Upgrade to
Windows 2000 (Recommended), and then follow the directions
to reinstall Windows 2000.

No, you will not need to reformat, and no this doesn't
wipe previous settings, nor data.
The seller should have provided you with an operating
system cd, but since he didn't and you are operating with
good faith, (ie purchased an install cd) you are operating
with a legal license for your operating system, be aware
do not lose this CD, nor the install key that came with it
you will need it again from time to time, keep it in a
safe place.
Also be warned, do not connect to the internet while this
upgrade is being performed, nor without some type of
firewall, both blaster and sasser variants can infect your
pc, within 10 minutes, if you connect to the net without a
firewall/patches, I recommend d-link DI604 routerfirewall
inexpensive at $20 after mail in rebate, well worth the
costs..
