reinstalling sp2

I installed a new motherboard and CPU. On boot up Windows XP shut itself down
because of a change in hard drive controllers. I ran Windows XP reair and got
in to the system. Now I have to reinstall SP2. I managed to download it after
tweaking file names and restting them. It will not install I get the
following message " smss.exe is open or in use". I closed everything and
still can not get the file clear. Does anybody know a workaround for this
problem?

And that is why the OP can't install SP2.

Thanks for your advice but no luck. I visited the sites and downloaded one of
the programs but it did not do the job. I scanned my directory for copies of
smss.exe and found three. One is in the system32 directory and the other two
are each in different sub directories under windows xp. Would it be safe to
deleat the two files not in the system directory. 2 out of three files are
the same size but one is slightly larger by 20k and has a date of 2004.

Since you can apparently get into your computer, go through these
malware removal steps systematically:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Do all the preparatory work. Then when you know your computer is
completely clean, take the machine offline and install SP2 with a
minimum of programs/processes running. Here are some links with
information about preparing for SP2. Naturally, you will already have
backed up all your data.

Are You Ready for WinXP SP2? -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist -

Guidelines and Troubleshooting

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Thanks for all your help. I downloaded the suggested software and ran it. It
removed some files and I was not able to get back past the sign in screen.
The program "Microsoft verification tool" gave me an error because a file is
missing. Microsft support a guy named Gadin spent over an hour getting me
back in. Once in I could not get on the internet. I bought MS XP professional
with SP2 and did an upgrade and again MS verification tool would not let me
in, so I had to format and install. Ms verification tool saw my new
motherboard and thought that I was copying the program on another machine. Do
not download this program.

Again thank you for your help
