Reinstall XP error message

Unfortunately, I have to reinstall XP (he) and when it gets to 13 minutes remaining this error message appears: "unregmp 2.exe Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point Get IUMS could not be located within dynamic link library MSDART.DLL" What do I do now? and what does that mean? I tried to reinstall it again and I get the same thing. If I can't get this to work I may have to find out how to erase everything on my computer and install XP again. If I have to do that, will this error message appear

Also how do I go about erasing everything on my computer (someone called it ZZ top)? Help please and thank you very much. Lois

You have to change msdart.dll to msdart2.dll. This can be done
using the Recovery Console
Check here on how to use.

Hi, Lois.
Also how do I go about erasing everything on my computer (someone called
it ZZ top)?

ZZ top? I don't know what that means. But, to erase EVERYTHING on your
computer, just reformat it.

Why do you want to erase everything? If you want to reinstall WinXP from
scratch, just boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and follow the prompts, including
the very early one that asks if you want to repartition and/or reformat the
hard disk.

If you want to reinstall WinXP itself but keep your installed applications
and data, see Microsoft's instructions for:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

After either a complete reinstall or an in-place upgrade, you'll need to get
your firewall and antivirus back in place, then visit Windows Update to get
the latest Service Pack and later critical updates. Better set aside half a
day for the whole project.

Aha! Thanks for that info, Tumbleweek. My Uncle has a Dell. I hope he
never needs that, but it's good to know about it.

Lois, if you're reading along, maybe you'd better check my advice with
Dell's tech support. Since you never mentioned Dell in your message, I was
giving you "generic" information.

That sounds as if that msdart.dll has got lost. So I would start by
doing a refresh of system files. Put the CD in the drive, exit the
auto-run, then go to Start - Run and run
SFC /SCANNOW

This might fix your problems anyway.

Next - when you say reinstall, make sure you are using the right method:
Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start
Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license
agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing
software installations and most settings. Have a backup of data though,
just in case. Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

If that is not enough (and if the message comes up I would take any
ignore option) you would have to as last resort do a full reinstall -
deleting data and programs. for that take New Install instead of
Repair. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete
the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
