Reinstal of XP and HD wipe

G

Guest

My question is, how can I completely wipe my HD before re-installing XP Pro?
We would like the HD as it was when we got it 1 1/2 ago, empty.

We're upgrading our PC. New MOBO and CPU.

Thanks.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Carey,

Thanks. But, I kinda knew that part. Is the HD going to be completely
blank, or are there still going to be fragments of the old system etc... on
it?

If you follow the procedure, you'll delete all existing partitions,
then create a new partition, then format the partition using the
NTFS file system. By doing this, all files and/or fragments will
be erased.

Hi,

That is a "canned" post Cary frequently uses, and it is essentially correct.
Provided you do as is noted in step 4 (delete all existing system partitions
and create new ones from the free space), you will not have any remnants of
the previous system remaining.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

You will, after installing, need to reactivate, but if it is over 120
days since you last did, a new clean install will activate on the net
just like first time

:

Check the manual for your computer to see how to do a restore to a
factory condition. Vendors are required to provide one of three ways to
reinstall the system, an XP installation CD, a restore CD, or a hidden
partition on the hard drive. Since you didn't get the former, it has to
be one of the latter.

Thank you for your help. The computer is an IBM Netvista (3 yr old). It did
not come with a manual. I found one on the internet, but can not find any
reference in it to doing a clean and return to original condition.
