2 HDs with XP Pro - Wipe out one

Karl Neumann

Dear Experts,

I removed a 60GB HD with XP Pro from my PC because I thought it was bad.
Installed a new 100GB HD and loaded the same XP Pro.

Turns out the 60GB HD is OK and I want to wipe it clean, my data, XP Pro and
all. Could I re-install it in the same PC on the secondary IDE cable and
then wipe it clean with a "format" command on a DOS command line? What
problems will I run into? Or is this a totally stupid idea?

Sincerely,

Karl

Hook it up as the slave on the same IDE cable as the master or hook it up on
the 2nd IDE cable.Whichever way you decide to do it make sure the switches
on the back of the HD match its settings on the IDE cable......slave or
master
After you reboot and enter XP normally go into Adminitrative Tools/computer
management/disk management from there you can format the drive which of
course will wipe the drive so be sure to safe what you wish first.

Get the diagnostic utility from the harddrive manufacturer. This should
fit on a floppy. As a failsafe precaution, remove the 100, then run the
diagnostics on the 60. Then when you know for sure that the 60 is good
and wiped (0's), set them up how you want them. Use caution with
your new setup watching for changed drive letters etc....

What you are advocating is a huge waste of time. The OP already knows
the old HD is OK (mentioned in the above post, see it?). He just
wants to know how to clear it's contents. Other posters gave GOOD
advice on that matter.
