Windows XP RegOpenKeyEx returned error 2(2)

Received the following error when upgrading from WIn 98 to Windows 2000

RegOpenKeyEx(system\setup\pid) returned error 2(2)

System was unable to retreive product identification of the system you are installing. The windows 2000 media may be damaged.

I enetered the product key when I started the upgrade. I also tried another Windows 2000 upgrade CD, but no luck.

How can I get past this problem? Thanks...
