Registry Mystery

Hello,

I did a registry scan and I noticed that a 'Location File',
H_Key\CurrentVersion\Microsoft\Explorer...ect, had a personal name(someone I
know) openswithlists...

'Is this normal? How would it have got there, can I delete it? I seriously
would like to know HOW it got there! I downloaded Registry Mechanic, to know
this...now concerned!

Please help! Is someone following me, tracking me, in this manner, in the
H_Key Registry?

What's the ENTIRE key (Lefthand pane, such as:
HKLM[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders)? Or is it a Value (left side of righthand pane)?Or Data (right
side of righthand pane)?
These things matter if you want an informed answer.

Be a bit more specific about the registry location. Right-click it and
choose "Copy key name" in the left pane and paste it in (ctrl - v), and
someone may be able to provide you with an explanation.

Jane,

Not to get too personal but the exact registry address would help. There are
legitimate ways for the name to get into your registry. For example, if I'm
the person you are referring to and I use your computer with your knowledge
and open Internet Explorer, then go to Google's site and type in my name and
do a search. A registry reference will be added for that search at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\NavClient\1.1\History.
I can't be certain but I tend to think there is a more logical reason for
the person's name being there than you might think.

Hello,

I have the Registry Key:

FX 22 Location

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.\.------\Openwithlist
default=blank

so, what is this? Is this permenant? How do I get rid of this?

The key: FX 22 LOCATION
HKey_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.\.-------\OpenWithList
default=blank

Ok! Now, if I have not allowed this person at my computer, EVER, then how
would the name be in this Location? (The personal name, will be annonymous).
Key above.
I wonder, why isn't my name appearing? Why would any other name? It is what
Drew stated, if I have given this person permission, with my knowledge, go to
Internet Explorer, Google, then type Drew, a reference to the name, is there!

I'm no expert, but...would it be this person, in reference here, be at
another HKey in Registery.

Hello,
I see that my email address is NOT the Passport one I have. I'm signed in as
(e-mail address removed).(primary). I don't have ([email protected]), hmmm!

Will have to check into this too! I have posted the HKey, in the other
responses.

Thanks!

If the registry entries containing the personal name under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

have a whole load of forward slashes in them eg ./pub/... or .com/...
then they probably relate to websites you have visited (eg using Internet
Explorer to browse sites in ftp format), so they are pretty innocuous. You
can right-click them and choose delete (choose export for a backup first if
you are in any doubt)

Hi Jon, The Registry Keys(LOCATION 22), many of them are
\.1\...\.206{2}...\.A00\....A01\...\backup\...\.bak\...\.bin\...\.cache\...\.DAT\....\DES\...etc!

With these in mind, now...would someones personal name appear in this
Registry area?? How then...would really like to know, is this normal?

Thanks,

Alan Edwards

The personal name would be the name of an FTP folder you opened in
Internet Explorer.
I am at an FTP site now using IE and when I opened a sub folder called
"Cleo Laine", this is the new entry created: (with a snip for brevity)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\(snip)/Cleo%20Laine/

Try similar and see.

Hi Jane

Yes, as Alan says it is probably due to a particular type of site that you
have visited ie one in ftp format.

For example, if you click on some of the ftp links on this page, and browse
some of the folders, you will also see similar entries appearing in that
portion of the registry.

http://www.ftp-sites.org/

If you look closely at the particular left pane entry in regedit, containing
the personal name, with all the forward slashes, then there may also be some
clues in its structure to tell you which particular domain / site caused the
entries to appear (reverse the order in your mind and think websites). Also
you can click the + sign to open up the entry, click on the "OpenWithList"
entry, and then have a look in the right-hand pane, to check whether it was
iexplore.exe that you used.

So you may have been browsing that person's website, or you may have a
folder named after them on one of your own personal websites, or you may
have found such a site while searching for the person eg via Google.
