HKEY_CURRENT_USER?

Hello,
I did a Registry Scan(Mechanic), printed out, then seen: FX-22 Location,
this....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.-----\OpensWithList

See 'HYPHENS' above, right before ''OpensWithLists...It has a personal name
there. A person I know! Please, can anyone tell me, HOW this happens, in this
area? This being my Software Location, does he have to be at my computer, or
download something, or mess with my Registry, without me knowing it? And,
would he have to change my Registry...for this to happen?

I'm really trying to figure out, HOW it happened, without me knowing it!
Really wondering why he would be in my Registry. Am I to be concerned, that a
relative of mine is in this Location, in other words!!!

Any help, much appreciated.....

You've asked this question before, and I've given you an answer. Do a search
for it.

It's rather easy. Create a file named;

xxx.YourNameHere

Now right-click the file and choose OpenWith and choose notepad.exe Now take
a look in;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

You may be right, I have asked here before. Good memory!
The other poster, second one, says a FILE is to be created. Now, since I
didn't create this file, how would I get this piticular one, in this Location
area?

From email? From an FTP site? From a document? In chat/shared? HOW? Is all...

Thanks,

Jane

He's telling you how to *see* for yourself how it could have occurred. In
other words, just as you were told in the other thread, someone put a name
in an extension of a file. You just didn't notice it at the time you looked
at it, but probably just wondered why the usual application, say, Word,
notepad, whatever, didn't open it up, then searched on the list of
applications in the dialog box, selected the one you wanted to read it with,
and that set up the extension association in the registry.

Hi,
Would I create this file, have it in my computer, or...would I get it from
someone elses computer, something they created? Then it remained at the time,
I opened it, to read...

See, Im lost here...

Thanks, to all here...

That's what others have been saying: someone sent you a file, probably,
with their name as an extension. The rest follows as described. Of course,
you *could* have renamed some file you had recieved, adding the sender's
name as an extension. The old extension would then be subsumed into the
filename, and there would be no registered app to open up, say, a '.jane'
extension, until you clicked on some chosen application, such as an editor
or word processor, in the dialog box that came up. Once you've done that,
unless you uncheck the 'always use this application' box, then that
extension will be *registered* to open a file with that extension, and thus
the entry in your registry.

Hth,
Joe
