Is there any way to "lock in" the settings in the
registry? I find that I'll make setting changes and a day
or so later the registry will forget them and go back to
the default settings. Thanks. - Kennard

Registry won't forget any settings. Windows resets some setting on each
reboot. But there are many spyware (malware), which for example hijacks IE's
home page. If you try to change registry key, which stores home page
address, these parasites changes it back. If you have this kind of problems,
Spybot can help, see link below.

But if you don't have spyware and still have problems, you can force
registry setting by setting registry key permissions. Use regedt32.exe and
set permission for that problem key so that system, administartors and even
you have only read access. That way the registry key cannot be changed
without first reseting permissions.
